FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
Q: What is Spann’s Skywatchers?
A: Spann’s Skywatchers is a volunteer team of trained, trusted Alabamians who serve as the
eyes and ears on the ground during weather events. They provide real-time observations,
storm reports, and ground truth to help enhance weather coverage and public safety across
the state.
Q: Do I need to be a meteorologist or weather expert to join?
A: Not at all. Many Skywatchers are weather enthusiasts or community-minded individuals
with no formal weather training. What matters most is a commitment to accuracy, respect,
and responsibility.
Q: How do I report weather information as a Skywatcher?
A: Once accepted, you’ll receive access to our private Slack platform, where Skywatchers
can share real-time updates, images, and videos with the team. You'll also receive guidance
on what kinds of reports are helpful and how to submit them effectively.
Q: What is “ground truth”?
A: Ground truth is verified information from the field, like hail size, wind damage, or flooding,
that confirms or adds context to radar and satellite data. It’s one of the most valuable tools
in real-time weather coverage.
Q: Is this a paid position?
A: No. This is a volunteer program. Skywatchers serve because they want to make a difference in their communities, learn more about weather, and be part of something meaningful.
Q: Why do you review social media accounts?
A: Skywatchers represent a respected community, and we want members who communicate with integrity and positivity. Reviewing social media helps ensure all team members align with our Code of Conduct.
Q: Can I join if I don’t use social media?
A: Yes, but we do prefer that members have at least one way to share observations publicly or with the team. We’ll work with you to determine the best way to participate.
Q: Is there a minimum age or location requirement?
A: Yes. You must be at least 18 years old and live in the state of Alabama.
Q: What equipment do I need to join?
A: No special equipment is required, though many Skywatchers use personal weather stations, radar apps, or smartphones to report conditions. We may offer discounts on certain weather tools for members.
Q: What kind of time commitment is expected?
A: That’s up to you. Some Skywatchers are active during every storm, while others contribute occasionally. There’s no minimum, but we do expect members to participate with purpose and accuracy.
Q: How do I apply?
A: Simply visit our “Join the Skywatchers” page and complete the application form. After review, qualified applicants will be contacted with next steps.
